Smoking of our pipes came 1500 years before Kolombos discovered and tobacco (TABACUM NIKOTIANA) from Celts with herbs and iron or earthen pipes.
Of course in the American continent smoking was very widespread between the Indians. The first European pipes were made until the end of the 18th century from clay, porcelain, silver, ostrakiti. They were elaborate, a real work of art and they were big.
The heath came in the topicality at the end of 18th century at a version from a French visitor of Corsica when his pipe of ostrakiti broke he asked them to make him one from the local timber (root of heath). The result was marvellous. Thus, he took roots of heath and took them to SAINT CLAUDE of France, a mountainous village which was famous for its carved timber for that season. The results were amazing. Thus began the production of pipes from heath.
Another version is that an Italian trader brought to roots of heath from Sicily , almost at the same time period. A third version reports that a shepherd at FRENCH JORA valley’s discovered accidentally the heath. Disagreement exists also on who manufactured the first pipes. Namely if it was F. Comoy or Ol Courricu.
